Located in Matanzas province, it has an average population of 18,252 inhabitants and an area of 22 square kilometers. It limits to the north with the Strait of Florida; to the south with Cárdenas; to the east with the Atlantic Ocean; and to the west with the Strait of Florida.
Its territory covers the Hicacos Peninsula, a land strip of 18.6 km extended along Cárdenas Harbor. Its main economic potential lies on its famous Varadero beach, the main tourist complex in Cuba.
